Proper Tattoo Care

Proper Tattoo Care: Achieving Desired Results and Avoiding Complications

A new tattoo is not only a means of self-expression and an exciting experience, but also a significant responsibility.

Proper aftercare is crucial for ensuring appropriate healing and minimizing the risk of infection. The larger the area covered in ink, the longer the healing process may take. Whether you're a novice or an experienced tattoo enthusiast, the importance of aftercare never diminishes.

Instructions

After the tattoo session is over, the artist treats the affected area and covers it with a protective film.

The client then receives personalized aftercare instructions. The film should be removed only after several hours, ideally at home or in another clean environment. The exact time for the first treatment and other instructions will be specified by the tattoo artist.

Here are the steps you need to follow:

  1. Protective Dressing: Immediately after getting the tattoo, the artist will cover it with a protective dressing to prevent dirt contact and reduce the risk of infection.
  2. First Removal: Remove the dressing 2-4 hours after the session.
  3. Cleaning: Gently wash the tattoo with warm water and antibacterial soap.
  4. Drying: Pat the tattoo dry with a paper towel.
  5. Healing Ointment: Apply a healing ointment to the tattoo.
  6. New Dressing: Cover the tattoo with a new, clean dressing.

These steps (points 2-6) should be repeated every 4-5 hours during the first 2-3 days while plasma is oozing from the tattoo. Afterward, it will suffice to wash the tattoo and apply a thin layer of ointment 3-4 times a day for two weeks. If done correctly, a protective film (scab) will form over the tattoo within 3-4 days.

Why Tattoo Aftercare is Important

Just like choosing the right tattoo artist, aftercare is extremely important.

It affects the quality of the final result and the longevity of the new design. Proper aftercare helps prevent infections and promotes quick skin healing. Additionally, 50 percent of the tattoo's quality depends on how well you take care of it.

For safe, fast, and quality healing, it is necessary to:

  • Wear Clean, Loose Clothing: Only wear clean and loose clothing made of cotton or other natural materials. The same goes for towels. Sweaty, dirty, and itchy fabrics can cause healing problems.
  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Do not expose the tattoo to direct sunlight. To preserve it, use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30-50.
  • Avoid Accessories: Refrain from wearing accessories in the area of the new tattoo.
  • Avoid Saunas and Pools: Do not visit saunas, baths, pools, etc., for three weeks.
  • Sleep on the Opposite Side: Sleep on the side opposite to where the tattoo was done.
  • Avoid Physical Strain: Avoid excessive physical exertion. Also, refrain from workouts and gym visits for 10 days.

Responsible and proper care is the step you must take for safe healing and maintaining the appearance of your body art. Regardless of whether your tattoo is small or covers your entire back, it is essential to ensure it heals completely. If you encounter problematic areas or color loss, consult your tattoo artist for a touch-up, but only after full healing.

Potential Complications

The tattooing procedure involves repeated skin damage using needles, making it vulnerable for some time.

Improper care or complete neglect can provoke the following complications:

  • Infection: Since a fresh tattoo is an open wound, it is prone to infections (mainly streptococcal and staphylococcal). Symptoms include swelling, fever, significant redness, pain, and pus discharge.
  • Inflammation: Normal tissue damage response can become excessive, leading to scarring.
  • Blurring and Color Loss: Without proper protection from sunlight, the pigment can be damaged.
  • Allergy: Using low-quality or unsuitable healing ointments or creams can trigger rashes, irritation, and other allergic reactions.
  • Scarring and Uneven Healing: Incorrect care can lead to scarring and uneven healing.

In the world of tattoos, where every line is a manifestation of art, proper care plays a significant role. Just as choosing a tattoo artist determines the beginning of your masterpiece, proper aftercare becomes the key to its preservation and longevity. Responsibility for a new tattoo is not just about aesthetics but also about skin health. Remember, every step towards healthy recovery is an investment in your body art.
